Jim Takes On San Diego Bay Halibut

Fishing with Jim is always a pleasure. No matter what we do, he is always in search of something new, and he welcomes an adventure. I was glad that this day all the elements were in order to oblige him with what he was looking for.

We started the day with me visiting the First Light crew at the sculpture at Shelter Island ramp. For those of you unaware of First Light, I can go into details, but that would be unfair to do so during Jim's report. Try this Link: First Light San Diego. Jim met me at the ramp just after First Light adjourned, and we got on the boat, and headed towards my favorite Halibut spot.

It took no time for the action to ensue, and Jim was hooked up with a monster. Unfortunately as fish stories go, he broke off when the fish shot down under the boat. That fish must have "Finding Nemo" on DVD or something, because when he swam down, it was all over.

It wasn't long before we stopped worrying over that fish. The Halibut were very receptive to a dropper loop rig, and an anchovy on a long shank hook. In fact, it seemed like there was no other way to catch them. They simply wanted that rig. Period.

In all, Jim did catch 20 Halibut. 19 of those Halibut were released. A few Spotted Bay Bass were in the mix, and a nice Calico also came aboard. It was a great day for fishing California Halibut, and an even better day for Jim to take on a new adventure.

Side note: on the way back to the ramp, Jim and I saw a Viking hat floating. I had to net it up, and it has since become a permanent fixture on my boat - Fish Inspired. Look for it in fish pics to come.
